MINNEAPOLIS (FOX 9) – President Donald Trump has nominated Christopher Phelan, an economist from the University of Minnesota, for a key position at the White House. If approved by the Senate, he will chair the Council of Economic Advisers, a group that evaluates economic conditions and guides government policy.
Phelan’s appointment follows the departure of Stephen Miran, who left the council to join the Federal Reserve Board. Phelan’s background includes consulting for the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He studied at Duke University and earned his PhD from the University of Chicago.
His nomination has sparked various opinions. White House spokesman Kush Desai praised Phelan, stating that Trump has assembled an outstanding economic team. This highlights the importance of economic expertise in shaping national policy.
Recent statistics show that in a survey conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research, 65% of economists believe that a strong advisory council is crucial for effective policy-making, particularly during challenging economic times. The role is pivotal, especially as the nation navigates economic recovery post-pandemic.
The Senate will now review Phelan’s nomination. Meanwhile, Pierre Yared, who had been serving as the acting chair, will resume his previous role at Columbia University’s business school.
