Unexpected Bliss: My Delightful Detour at the Hidden Smoke Shack in San Antonio

Last week, I had a lunch adventure that took an unexpected turn. I set out for one restaurant but accidentally ended up at another, leading to a tasty surprise.

Craving Texas barbecue, I planned to visit Smoke Shack BBQ on Broadway. I’ve driven by it many times, but I never stopped in. When I arrived, I realized I was actually next door at Smoke Shack Delicatexan, a meat market and sandwich shop. A bit flustered, I ordered from their menu and was delighted by the delicious meat that arrived. This unexpected meal was just what I needed.

For anyone unfamiliar with the location, Smoke Shack BBQ is at the corner of Broadway and Pershing Avenue, near The Cottage Pub and The Pigpen Neighborhood Bar, all owned by restaurateur Chris Conger. Although parking can be tricky, there are several spots in the area and a trio of restaurants to choose from.

Smoke Shack BBQ features a lively interior adorned with memorabilia from Guy Fieri’s visit on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The menu is straightforward yet satisfying, offering brisket, pulled pork, sausage, and ribs, all served with a selection of sides like mac and cheese and fried okra. You can’t miss their special sandwiches, like the brisket grilled cheese or the Tejas hot chicken sandwich.

During my visit, I ordered a three-meat plate with brisket, turkey, and sausage, paired with mac and cheese and green beans. The brisket outshone typical chain BBQ, while the turkey and sausage were juicy and full of flavor. The mac and cheese could have used a bit more creaminess, but the roll provided a nice counterbalance. The green beans, however, were boiling hot and a bit too spicy for my liking.

Afterward, I checked out Smoke Shack Delicatexan. It has limited outdoor seating and a small but inviting space inside, perfect for a casual meal on the go. Their sandwiches, like the Bar-B-Cuban and the Texas Reuben, are great options, especially if you want a more upscale experience than fast food. Their meat market offers steaks and sausages for those wanting to cook at home.

My personal favorite from the Delicatexan is the Tri Tip Sandwich, packed with caramelized onions and smoked garlic sauce. It’s perfect after a long morning. Both Smoke Shack locations have something delicious to offer, making them great lunch spots. Just double-check to ensure you head to the correct one!
