CHARLESTON — A tractor-trailer carrying dog food flipped over on Route 30A in Charleston, injuring the driver from Pennsylvania. The incident happened late Friday night, just before midnight.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, the crash damaged the truck’s fuel tank, leading to a large diesel spill. Crews from the county and the state Department of Environmental Conservation worked for nearly seven hours to clean up. They also cleared packages of dog food scattered from the trailer.
When deputies arrived, they found the 2023 Freightliner, driven by a J.B. Hunt Transport employee, overturned in a ditch. The investigation revealed the driver was going too fast and couldn’t handle a curve. The truck left the road, hit several signs, and ended up in the ditch.
The 43-year-old driver was treated for minor injuries at St. Mary’s Hospital. He faces charges for unsafe lane changes, speeding, and ignoring traffic signals.
The wreckage was cleared, and Route 30A reopened by 6:30 a.m. Saturday.
This accident raises concerns about highway safety, especially with tractor-trailer operations. According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, about 400,000 accidents involving large trucks occur each year in the U.S., many linked to speeding or driver errors.
