In Ashburn, Virginia, the Washington Commanders recently welcomed their new seventh-round draft pick, Athan Kaliakmanis. He’s joining a competitive group of quarterbacks, including Jayden Daniels and Marcus Mariota. Despite the crowded scene, Kaliakmanis is excited about his opportunity.
“Who else would you want to learn from?” he asked during a conference call, wearing a big smile and his Commanders hat. “It’s a dream come true to be a part of this team.” Kaliakmanis was the eighth quarterback drafted, marking the first time Washington selected a quarterback since picking Daniels in 2024.
Daniels is the current starter, with Mariota as the backup. Sam Hartman, another quarterback, has spent most of his time on the practice squad, only stepping in when injuries hit the team. Harris, a former undrafted free agent, is eager to prove himself but has yet to take a snap in a regular-season game.
Before joining the Commanders, Kaliakmanis played three seasons at Minnesota. He transferred to Rutgers, where he saw significant action, throwing 38 touchdown passes against 14 interceptions. Last season, he completed more passes and threw for 428 more yards than in previous years, showcasing his growing ability to connect deep with receivers.
His improvement came from practice and teamwork. “We were always throwing, building that connection,” he explained. This dedication to improvement could be crucial as he navigates his new role.
Kaliakmanis also made an impression during his visit to the Commanders’ complex earlier this year, where he chatted with new offensive coordinator David Blough. He fondly recalled telling Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles after a tough loss that they’d meet again. As luck would have it, they’re now teammates, which has him excited. “I’m glad he’s on my team for sure,” he said.
According to recent surveys, many rookie quarterbacks find learning under experienced players invaluable. This mentorship can significantly impact their growth, as noted by NFL analysts. They emphasize that while talent is important, the right environment can accelerate a player’s development. Kaliakmanis’s eagerness to learn could prove beneficial as he adapts to the professional game.
As training camps approach, it will be fascinating to see how Kaliakmanis integrates with his new team and develops alongside seasoned players. The energy in the Commanders’ camp is building, and fans are eager to see how the new dynamics unfold.
