The Seattle University community has once again shown its strength and generosity. This year, the annual SU Gives event raised over $1.1 million, marking a significant achievement for the university. The fundraiser engaged alumni, friends, and families in a 24-hour effort to support scholarships and vital programs.
With 2,188 donors contributing to more than 70 funds, SU Gives showcased the spirit of giving that defines Seattle University. Every donation, big or small, plays a crucial role in fostering future leaders through a holistic, Jesuit education. Here are some highlights of the impact:
- The Seattle University Fund raised $173,000 from 144 donors. This flexible fund addresses urgent needs, whether it’s enhancing student services, increasing scholarships, or upgrading classroom technology.
- In the realm of Campus Life, 91 donors contributed over $70,000 to various initiatives, including the Basic Needs and Food Security Initiative. This program supports the SU Wellness Cafe and Food Pantry, which aids around 150 students weekly. It also recovers between 600 and 800 meals each month, helping students stay focused on their education during tough times.
- The fundraising effort also boosted academic excellence. The Fostering Scholars Program received over $24,000, helping students from the foster care system with tuition, books, and housing throughout the year.
Edgar Gonzalez, Senior Vice President of University Advancement, expressed gratitude for the community’s support. “SU Gives demonstrates the legendary impact our community can make in support of the university causes we care about most,” he noted.
Trends show an increasing focus on sustainability and mental health among students nationwide. According to a recent survey by the American Council on Education, 60% of students reported heightened stress and anxiety levels. Programs like SU’s Basic Needs and Food Security Initiative are critical in helping students manage these challenges, ensuring they can concentrate on their studies.
