Indian Railways Boosts Mumbai-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Service to 20 Coaches to Meet Growing Demand

Indian Railways has made a significant upgrade to the Mumbai Central-Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express, increasing its capacity from 16 to 20 coaches. This change aims to meet the soaring demand for passenger travel on this busy route, where occupancy has consistently topped 100%.

The Mumbai to Ahmedabad route spans 491 kilometers and takes about 5 hours and 30 minutes, with stops at key locations like Borivali, Vapi, Surat, and Vadodara. This is not just a local improvement, but part of a series of upgrades across high-demand corridors, as over 162 Vande Bharat services are now in operation. Interestingly, about 23% of these services feature the new 20-coach configuration.

Since its launch in 2019, the Vande Bharat Express has seen impressive growth, attracting nearly 4 crore passengers in FY 2025-26 alone—an increase of 34% year-on-year. Overall, it has served more than 9.1 crore passengers on around 1 lakh trips. The strong ridership signals that demand is outpacing current capacity, prompting Indian Railways to adapt continually.

Expert opinions suggest that such upgrades are vital for keeping the rail network aligned with the dynamic needs of a growing economy. These enhancements not only serve commuters but also strengthen economic ties between states.

One standout feature of the Vande Bharat Express is its focus on passenger comfort. The trains are designed with automatic plug doors and ergonomic seating, making travel more enjoyable. For those interested in amenities, each train includes a mini pantry and hot water provisions, catering to both leisure and business travelers.

In addition to the Mumbai-Ahmedabad service, the Gandhinagar Capital-Mumbai Central route is another essential connection, further facilitating the movement between Gujarat and Maharashtra, and serving the needs of daily commuters and business travelers alike.

Overall, these upgrades illustrate how Indian Railways is committed to evolving with passenger expectations in a fast-changing country.
