On April 26, the Indian Naval Ship Sunayna docked at Changi Naval Base in Singapore. This marks its fourth stop as part of the Indian Ocean Ship SAGAR initiative. The vessel, with a diverse crew from 16 countries, is working to strengthen ties in the Indian Ocean Region. Before Singapore, it visited Male, Phuket, and Jakarta.
The arrival was met with enthusiasm, highlighting the strong maritime relationship between India and Singapore. India’s High Commissioner, Dr. Shilpak Ambule, met with the crew and praised their efforts in enhancing maritime cooperation.
Commander Siddharth Chaudhary, the ship’s commanding officer, paid his respects at the Kranji War Memorial. He also discussed further cooperation with Colonel Chuah Meng Soon from the Republic of Singapore Navy.
The ship opened its doors to visitors, including schoolchildren and social media influencers, allowing them to explore life at sea. On April 27, the crew participated in a themed run titled “One Ocean, One Mission,” aimed at raising awareness about maritime issues.
Further exchanges with the Republic of Singapore Navy are planned, including visits to navigation simulators and the Navy Museum. Unique activities like joint yoga sessions and discussions with experts are also part of the schedule.
INS Sunayna will leave Singapore on April 29 to continue its mission, focused on promoting maritime cooperation and security. The IOS SAGAR initiative showcases India’s dedication to regional maritime partnerships. Launched on March 16, this initiative encourages collaboration among naval forces from 16 nations.
The goal is not only to enhance security but also to foster growth in the region. Given recent geopolitical tensions, efforts like this are crucial. According to a recent survey by the International Maritime Organization, 60% of maritime professionals believe collaborative initiatives significantly improve regional security.
