Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) and Bharat Forge, along with the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), are making strides in developing next-generation armored vehicles. They recently launched prototypes of the Vikram VT 21, featuring both tracked and wheeled platforms, alongside a 30-mm unmanned turret.
These prototypes were designed by DRDO’s Vehicles Research & Development Establishment and produced in just 30 months. That’s an impressive turnaround time for such complex machinery. The new vehicles include features that improve mobility, modularity, and crew safety. The unmanned turret allows for remote operation, which means crew members can stay safe inside the vehicle while still engaging targets accurately.
Sukaran Singh, CEO of TASL, praised this project as a milestone in collaboration between Tata and DRDO, highlighting both speed and quality. He noted that this aligns perfectly with India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, aiming for self-reliance in defense production.
TASL has already shown its capabilities with previous projects like the Tejas Mk1A and Akash missile systems, reinforcing its role in developing effective solutions for the Indian Armed Forces. Bharat Forge enhances the durability of these vehicles, utilizing its experience in creating strong military components.
The Vikram VT 21 series is designed for the future, incorporating technologies that enable crewless operations. This development is particularly relevant as border tensions continue, especially with recent incidents between India and China in Ladakh. The introduction of these indigenous vehicles boosts India’s defense readiness without dependence on imports.
Recent studies indicate that countries are increasingly investing in home-grown defense technologies. According to a 2022 report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, global military spending reached an all-time high, with a significant amount allocated for local defense production. This trend highlights the importance of self-sufficiency in today’s geopolitical climate.
