Scorpions are surprisingly fascinating creatures. Recent research reveals that these ancient arachnids carry metals in their pincers and stingers. Scientists at the Smithsonian have studied various scorpion species and discovered that the metals help them hunt and defend themselves.

Lead researcher Sam Campbell explained that their study shows how different scorpion species have evolved to use metals in unique ways. Scorpions have been around for about 435 million years, making them one of the earliest animals to move from water to land. Their shape has remained consistent, with strong pincers and a venomous stinger that helps them catch prey and fend off threats.

While past studies hinted that some scorpions had metal in their bodies, it wasn’t clear if this applied to all species. This new research is the first to statistically analyze metal presence while considering evolutionary relationships among different scorpions, as noted by senior author Hannah Wood.

Thanks to a vast collection at the National Museum of Natural History, researchers examined 18 species’ pincers and stingers using advanced imaging technologies. They found zinc as the most common element at the tips of stingers, followed by manganese. Interestingly, scorpions with strong pincers had less zinc, suggesting different evolutionary strategies for using these metals.

About 3,000 species of scorpions exist globally, and all might possess some metal content. This finding opens doors for further research, as understanding how diet or differences between males and females might influence metal concentration could provide exciting insights.

Looking ahead, Campbell and his team hope to broaden their studies to include more species and explore whether other arachnids, like spiders and bees, share similar metal traits. Their findings highlight the intriguing world of scorpions and their unique adaptations.
