Steam is a popular place for gamers to snag deals during big sales. But many users end up with a pile of games they never play, which can feel like wasted money. Solo developer Nic Taylor has turned this issue into a unique concept with his indie game, Game Quest: The Backlog Battler. In this game, you face off against the unplayed titles in your library in a gladiatorial arena.
Recently, excitement has been building online. Posts about Taylor’s project have been buzzing on X (formerly Twitter). The idea is straightforward: the more games you have yet to play, the tougher your enemies become. But there’s more! You can also challenge the unplayed games in your friends’ libraries, as long as they’ve made their backlogs public.
The game won’t fully launch until 2026, but there’s a demo to try out now. I gave it a go, and while the combat is basic, there are some fun elements. For example, during battles, your least-played games attack you, while your most-played titles cheer you on from the sidelines. I got a good laugh when Baldur’s Gate 3 swooped in to help while I was losing to Baldur’s Gate II: Enhanced Edition.
Interestingly, the concept taps into a significant gaming trend. A recent survey showed that almost 70% of gamers report having backlog games they never get around to playing. This game takes a humorous jab at that by turning it into a challenge.
It’s hard not to think how tricky this would be if I could use my Epic Games account. With so many unplayed free titles there, it would be a serious battle. Just imagine having to defend yourself against all those games with only Alan Wake II backing you up.
In a world where managing your game library can feel overwhelming, Game Quest: The Backlog Battler offers a fun way to address it. And who knows? This game might even encourage players to dig into those neglected titles packed in their digital libraries.
