Michigan State University Police announced the arrest of a 31-year-old man, Xin Tong, for allegedly operating a meth lab in Wells Hall. He faces serious charges, including malicious destruction of property worth over $20,000 and operating a meth lab.
Tong is currently held at the Ingham County Jail, with a bond set at $500,000. His arrest follows reports of significant property damage linked to criminal activity in the building.
Last week, the Department of Police and Public Safety (DPPS) received reports about the situation in Wells Hall. After identifying Tong, officers made contact with him on Sunday. The university then decided to close the building the following morning for safety reasons.
Authorities discovered a variety of chemicals in Tong’s possession. These items, while available for legal purchase, can be dangerous when misused. Chemicals found include sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid, isopropyl alcohol, and butane.
Following the gathering of evidence, DPPS presented the case to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office, leading to felony charges against Tong. Police Chief Mike Yankowski reassured the campus community that environmental tests showed Wells Hall remains safe for occupants.
Initially expected to reopen, Wells Hall will stay closed for the rest of the week. This extended closure allows time for the DPPS to collect evidence and for the Office of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to conduct thorough inspections and clean the affected areas.
