The University of St. Thomas in Houston is making strides in affirming its Catholic identity. Recently, the school welcomed three notable leaders to its board: R.R. “Rusty” Reno, Adam Laxalt, and Mary Eberstadt. Each of them brings a strong background in faith and public life.
Reno, the editor of First Things, expressed his vision for the university to become a significant player in Catholic education. As a former theology professor, he sees a unique chance to promote the Thomistic tradition at the school. He emphasizes the need for a clear mission to prevent the university from becoming just another secular institution with a chapel.
Laxalt, the former Attorney General of Nevada and a veteran, pointed out an ongoing revival of orthodox Catholicism in the U.S. He believes students today crave in-depth spiritual and intellectual formation.
Mary Eberstadt, a writer and senior research fellow, is particularly excited about the university’s direction. She senses a “next American awakening,” where new forms of community are emerging across various campuses. She aims to strengthen students’ social lives, especially post-COVID, to help them build supportive networks.
Interestingly, Eberstadt suggested adding square dances to campus activities. She sees it as a fun and democratic way to foster connection among students, moving them away from screens and toward each other. With the U.S. celebrating its 250th anniversary soon, she believes this American pastime would be a fitting addition.
As they embark on this journey, these leaders hope to reinforce UST’s mission and foster a vibrant community that nourishes both faith and personal growth.
