KENNESAW, Ga. | Apr 30, 2026

On Wednesday, Kennesaw State University celebrated its top staff at the annual awards ceremony held at the KSU Center. This event honors those who play a crucial role in supporting both faculty and students in KSU’s mission of teaching and research.

“Our staff’s work is vital to our mission,” stated President Kathy S. Schwaig. “This year’s nominees and winners show us how their contributions inspire our community every day.”

The awards were presented in a lively, Emmy-style format. Chief Human Resources Officer Karen McDonnell highlighted that every staff role, whether or not it involves direct student interaction, contributes significantly to the student experience.

The top award, the Outstanding Owl Award, went to Nicole Phillips, the associate director for outreach and engagement in Counseling and Psychological Services. Phillips, who has been with the university since 2003, was nominated by Randall Bogard, executive director of student activities.

Bogard praised Phillips for her extensive knowledge and support. “She is a crucial resource and exemplifies what it means to represent KSU well,” he said. “Her work with the ‘You Matter’ program and other wellness initiatives has made a real difference for students.”

This year, the staff awards recognized five outstanding employees:

  • Positive Impact/Service to the Community Award: Lauren Hughes, Living Learning Lab program manager.
  • Excellence in Innovation Award: Amanda Sampson, assistant director of Enterprise Customer Relationship Management.
  • Student Success Impact Award: Katrina Fults, associate director for Residence Life.
  • Outstanding Leadership Award: Amanda Rodgers, manager in the Wellstar School of Nursing.

Nominations for these awards reflect the university’s commitment to recognizing talent within its staff. This year, 64 candidates were nominated, showcasing the high level of excellence in KSU’s workforce.

Overall, these awards not only celebrate achievements but also help pave the way for future excellence within Kennesaw State University.
