LOS ANGELES (AP) — Britney Spears faces charges in California for driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, according to authorities.
The 44-year-old pop star was charged with a misdemeanor. The Ventura County District Attorney’s Office noted that the specifics about the substances involved haven’t been revealed yet.
On March 4, Spears was arrested after driving her black BMW erratically on U.S. 101. Officers reported she appeared impaired and conducted sobriety tests before taking her to a Ventura County jail. She was released on bail the next day, and the case went to prosecutors on March 23.
At that time, a representative for Spears called her actions “completely inexcusable” and highlighted the need for change in her life.
After the incident, Spears voluntarily entered a substance abuse treatment program, as confirmed by her representative. Her arraignment is scheduled for Monday, and since it’s a misdemeanor, she likely won’t need to appear in court.
According to prosecutors, the case will follow standard procedures given that Spears has no prior DUI history and no accidents were involved. She might be offered a “wet reckless” plea deal, which involves probation, credit for any jail time served, a DUI class, and associated fines. This type of plea is often given to those who show initiative in addressing their issues, the district attorney mentioned.
Spears lives just outside Ventura County. Her arraignment will take place in Ventura, a coastal city about 70 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Once a pop icon of the 90s and 2000s, Spears skyrocketed to fame with hits like “Toxic” and “Oops! … I Did It Again,” earning multiple platinum certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America.
Over the years, Spears has faced intense public scrutiny, especially regarding her mental health. In 2008, she entered a conservatorship, led by her father, which lasted over a decade and controlled her personal and financial decisions. The conservatorship ended in 2021, allowing her more freedom.
Since then, she has experienced personal changes, including marriage and divorce, and released a bestselling memoir titled “The Woman in Me.” Despite her past successes, Spears has stepped back from her music career, with only a few singles released since her last full album in 2016.
According to a recent survey by Rolling Stone, public interest in Spears’ life continues to be strong, with social media buzzing whenever news about her drops. This highlights how her story resonates with fans, reflecting ongoing conversations about mental health and celebrity culture.
As this situation unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the battles many face and the importance of addressing personal challenges head-on.
