Zach Cregger Calls Austin Abram’s ‘Resident Evil’ Role His Ultimate ‘Avatar’: Insights and Impact

Zach Cregger is about to bring his vision of the Resident Evil franchise to life. His new film premieres on September 18, and he’s adding an original character to the mix in Raccoon City.

Cregger decided not to rehash existing stories from the popular video games, as he thinks they handle those narratives very well. “I wanted to craft a story set in the Resident Evil universe, but I didn’t want to repeat what the games already depict,” he said in an interview with PlayStation. This fresh approach allows him to explore new angles and celebrate the source material without redundancy.

The film unfolds in a world reminiscent of Resident Evil 2, taking place during a chaotic night in Raccoon City. The story follows a medical courier named Bryan, played by Austin Abrams, who finds himself fighting to survive during an unexpected outbreak while making a delivery. “Austin represents the average player. He’s not a superhero; he’s just an ordinary guy caught in a nightmare,” Cregger explained.

Cregger intends to show how someone like Bryan would react when faced with horror, like encountering a mutant dog. “I wanted to explore the emotions that would come from such a terrifying moment. Watching Austin brings that to life,” he added.

The film is co-written with Shay Hatten and stars a diverse cast, including Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Johnno Wilson.

Resident Evil, based on a 1996 Capcom game, has already seen seven adaptations since 2002, grossing over $1.2 billion globally at the box office. However, as trends in entertainment shift, even Netflix recently canceled its Resident Evil series after just one season, signaling a changing audience appetite.

Cregger’s take on Resident Evil arrives at a time when horror films are especially appealing to audiences. A recent survey shows that 60% of viewers prefer horror movies for their thrilling and suspenseful storytelling.

With a mixture of fresh characters, a rich backstory, and a focus on authentic reactions to horror, Cregger’s movie promises to offer fans an exciting new chapter in the Resident Evil saga.
