Google just released “COSMO,” a new AI assistant for Android devices, on the Play Store. This app comes from Google Research and aims to make everyday tasks easier.
COSMO uses artificial intelligence to help organize your day, answer questions, and simplify various tasks. Weighing in at 1.13 GB, the app includes a local Gemini Nano model, which means it can work without constant internet access. Once you install it, COSMO will ask for some system permissions to function properly. The chat interface is minimal, indicating that it’s still in the testing phase.
Here are some of COSMO’s key features:
- List Tracker: Automatically suggests lists for you.
- Document Writer: Offers to create documents or summarize information on request.
- Calendar Event Suggester: Helps schedule events based on discussions with others.
- Browser Agent: Automates tasks using Mariner, a browser tool.
- Timer Creation: Suggests setting a timer for time-sensitive tasks.
- Deep Research: Gathers information from multiple sources for complex topics.
- Quick Photo Lookup: Finds photos you’ve taken based on your conversations.
- Google It: Performs quick web searches to answer immediate questions.
- Jargon Definitions: Explains complex terms or acronyms.
- Contextual Insights: Provides insights about people and events.
- Recall: Reminds you of things you might forget.
- Conversation Summary: Summarizes recent conversations when the context changes.
COSMO also has a settings page with a “Fulfillment Model,” offering three options: Hybrid, PI Only, and Nano Only. However, the exact meaning of “PI” remains unclear.
It’s noteworthy that this release might have happened prematurely, possibly ahead of Google I/O 2026 scheduled for later this month. Experts suggest that while COSMO shows promise, it appears to be more of a prototype than a fully ready product for consumers.
Statistically speaking, AI applications are growing rapidly. A recent survey found that 67% of people use some form of AI tool in their daily lives, showcasing a shift in how technology assists us.
While COSMO is still experimental, its potential impact is significant. As AI becomes more integrated into our lives, tools like COSMO may redefine how we interact with technology.
