Head Coach Matt LaFleur recently described the start of the offseason program as an “onboarding process” for new players. He hopes this will ease any nerves they might feel when they join the veteran players in Phase 2 of their training.
LaFleur pointed out that the rookies are getting a crash course in team practices and the playbook. “These guys are learning a lot, and it can be overwhelming,” he said. “It’s crucial for them to adapt quickly.”
During these early days, players are only absorbing about 5-10% of the playbook. LaFleur emphasized the importance of self-study for newcomers. “It’s on them to learn when they’re away. This way, they’ll be prepared when they return to train with the vets.”
The rookies are excited to fit in and build relationships. Some, like Keisean Nixon, are already reaching out to teammates, including new corners Cisse and Jackson. Others like McClellan are bonding with veterans, such as running back Josh Jacobs, who also hails from Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Cisse spoke about the value of learning from experienced players, stating, “Those guys have been around a while, so it’s best to listen and learn from them. I’m coming in ready to work hard and improve every day.”
