Clean Water Action is gearing up for its 24th Annual Breakfast of Champions, set for May 22nd at Edgewood Yacht Club in Cranston, Rhode Island. This gathering celebrates advocates who have made big strides in environmental protection. Emily Howe, the organization’s RI Director, emphasized the importance of recognizing those efforts, especially in tough times. She remarked, “When Trump gave us anti-environment headwinds, Rhode Island built wind power.”
This year, the spotlight is on notable awardees. Sheila, a dedicated advocate for over 30 years, has tackled issues like lead pipes and e-waste management. Her push for the RI Renewable Energy Standard has made a significant impact. Cindy Luppi, Clean Water Action’s Senior Director, said, “Her legacy includes the many environmental leaders she trained and inspired.”
Kate is another vital figure, working on Green Bonds that fund land conservation and climate resilience. Her efforts help unlock funds that preserve open spaces in the state.
Environmental journalist Steve Ahlquist is recognized for ensuring that local voices are heard in discussions about justice and climate issues. His recent work provides crucial insights into Rhode Island’s environmental struggles.
Aislinn stands out as a defender of Rhode Island’s renewable energy sector, playing a key role in the establishment of the Revolution Wind farm, which powers over 350,000 homes. This achievement places Rhode Island among the frontrunners in offshore wind energy.
Legislators like Representative Spears and Senator McKenney are also distinguished for their contributions. Spears led the charge on the “Blue Wave Bond for Coastal Preparedness Act,” which allocates $100 million to combat rising sea levels and coastal storms. McKenney has worked on reforming the Coastal Resources Management Council and improving recycling initiatives in the state.
The Breakfast of Champions not only acknowledges these leaders but also highlights the ongoing commitment to environmental advocacy. Since its inception around the Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has championed strong health and environmental protections. The event promises to unite community members in celebration of past achievements and ongoing battles for a sustainable future.
