At a recent expo, experts gathered to discuss how technology is transforming agriculture. They wanted to understand what farmers need, what solutions are available, and where the industry is headed. Everett, a key player in the project, mentioned, “We aim to use insights to enhance the wireless sensor network technology we’re developing.”
Davis Onyeoguzoro, a computer science doctoral student at the University of Idaho in Coeur d’Alene, joined the team to engage with farmers. “I discovered their main concerns,” he shared. “Most companies are focusing on water issues, along with how regulations impact farmers.”
The SCARECRO technology has already been tested in a vineyard in Virginia and an agricultural site in Sandpoint. Everett expressed interest in refining it further, especially to make it user-friendly for farmers focused on precision agriculture.
Over the past two decades, the University of Idaho has filed over 130 patents and plant variety certificates. While plant varieties were prominent in earlier years, a notable shift has occurred in recent times. Harner pointed out, “Since 2022, we’ve seen more patents in fields like computer science, robotics, and advanced medical devices.” Collaboration with the Idaho National Laboratory has been vital, particularly in areas like nuclear reactor safety.
Students and faculty found value beyond just research at the expo. Onyeoguzoro noted, “It’s refreshing to step outside, talk to people, and not just interact with screens.”
Since 2023, 38 U of I teams have completed the I-Corps program, vital for helping researchers assess market needs. As Swenson highlighted, “The research is done. Now we need to see if it’s worth pursuing in the market.”
Interestingly, a survey conducted by the USDA in 2022 revealed that over 60% of farmers are open to adopting new technologies, especially around water management and crop monitoring. This indicates a growing trend towards tech in farming, making such expos crucial for understanding real-world needs.
By addressing farmers’ challenges and exploring solutions, the agricultural tech landscape continues to evolve. It’s a shift that promises to enhance productivity and sustainability in farming practices.
