Bharat Khera, a seasoned IAS officer from the Himachal Pradesh cadre, has recently stepped into the role of Secretary at the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME). With a career that spans over two decades, Khera’s background is extensive and varied.
Before his current position, Khera served as Additional Secretary in the Department of Consumer Affairs. He also spent more than five years as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, where he managed significant areas like Indian Air Force operations and organized major events, including the Republic Day celebrations from 2017 to 2020. His role wasn’t limited to defense; he also played a part in the Border Roads Organisation and worked on enhancing international cooperation.
Khera has contributed to strengthening India’s defense infrastructure through his work with companies such as Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders and Goa Shipyard Limited. He was integral to the “Make in India” initiative, demonstrating a commitment to boosting domestic manufacturing.
In the recent Covid-19 pandemic, he served in the Cabinet Secretariat, supporting departments related to Commerce & Industry and Technology. His educational background is impressive, with a degree in engineering from BITS Pilani, an MPA from Syracuse University, and further studies in public policy at ISB. He is also a Chevening Fellow, which highlights his international exposure and commitment to public service.
Khera has held significant positions in Himachal Pradesh, including Home Secretary and Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, showcasing his leadership and administrative skills.
As MSME plays a crucial role in India’s economy, Khera’s expertise could be pivotal in navigating current challenges faced by small businesses. A report from the Ministry of MSME revealed that small enterprises contribute nearly 30% to India’s GDP and employ around 110 million people. These statistics underline the importance of effective leadership in this sector.
Khera’s appointment signals a promising direction for MSME efforts in fostering innovation and entrepreneurship, crucial for economic recovery and growth.
