Jalen Rose’s Big Moment at Michigan’s Commencement
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Jalen Rose, a basketball star and a key member of the Michigan Wolverines’ famous Fab Five, is gearing up for an important role. He will deliver the commencement speech at the University of Michigan’s graduation ceremony in Michigan Stadium, known as the Big House.
“It’s a huge honor,” Rose shared. “I never expected to be invited to speak at such a big event. With 70,000 people, this is a real responsibility.”
During the ceremony, Rose will also receive an honorary doctorate, completing a journey that started on the basketball court decades ago.
A Personal Connection
For Rose, this honorary degree is more than just a title; it’s deeply personal. He recalls a childhood dream of becoming like Julius Erving, the legendary “Dr. J.”
“I used to joke with my mom about how one day I’d be Dr. J because my name starts with J,” he said. Although he humbly acknowledges he never reached Erving’s level, he views this honorary degree as a nod to his younger self.
“Ma, I didn’t do that. But I’m going to get a doctorate and be Dr. J this weekend,” Rose remarked, also paying tribute to his late mother, Jeanne Rose.
Preparing for the Big Speech
Facing 70,000 graduates and their families is daunting, even for someone used to the spotlight. To prepare, Rose has studied previous commencement speeches from figures like Barack Obama and Denzel Washington.
“Getting this live mic at Michigan Stadium is a big deal,” Rose noted. Despite his prior experiences, this moment feels different. “I’m nervous because I want to do it right, but it’s not about me.”
He plans to draw upon his life lessons, quoting from the film “Rocky.” His speech will focus on resilience and the truth about failure.
“Life can be tough. You will face challenges. But that’s expected. Your dream job won’t come overnight,” he said.
Rooted in Michigan
Rose’s bond with the University of Michigan goes beyond basketball. As a Detroit native, he’s proud of his academic achievements, including making the dean’s list and recently establishing a scholarship.
“This is a significant moment for everyone graduating,” Rose emphasized, reflecting on the pride of shouting “Go Blue” as a symbol of lasting connections at the university.
Reuniting the Fab Five
Coincidentally, Rose’s commencement speech occurs during a resurgence of the Fab Five. He hinted at more appearances together with his former teammates, Chris Webber, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King, and Ray Jackson. They have rarely gathered since their historic run in the early ’90s, which transformed college basketball.
Rose recently reunited with them ahead of a Wolverines game, noting, “That was only the third time since 1993 that we’ve all been together.” The nostalgia and excitement from fans were palpable.
“We’re going to do a lot more together,” Rose mentioned, emphasizing their commitment to community engagement and inspiring young people.
A Lifelong Achievement
Reflecting on everything—the honorary degree, the graduation stage, and the Fab Five legacy—Jalen Rose expressed what it means to him.
