YOUNGSTOWN — It was a night of celebration at Youngstown State University as graduates gathered for commencement. Among them were Lexi Blakeman and Imani Griffin, two students whose stories highlighted faith and resilience. They graduated with degrees that represent years of hard work and dedication.
Lexi, a 2022 graduate from Columbiana High School, earned a Bachelor of Science in dental hygiene. Her journey through college was guided by her deep faith. “I believe in Jesus, who helped me through all four years,” she said. With no backup plan, she’s focused on becoming a dental hygienist and possibly pursuing a career in dental sales in the future.
Also graduating was Imani, who completed her degree in social work. Imani’s goal is to support troubled teens. She dreams of establishing a nonprofit organization that provides a safe space for youth to access essential services. Her graduation cap declared, “My story is his grace,” reflecting her belief that her achievements are part of a greater plan.
Friday’s ceremony was the largest of four planned commencements. More than 2,000 graduates received degrees, marking a significant milestone for them. The keynote speaker, Matt Kresic from Cadence Care Network, encouraged the graduates to embrace life’s detours as learning opportunities. He shared his own path, from working in a factory to building a rewarding career in social work, underscoring the value of mentorship and community support.
In his address, YSU President Bill Johnson reminded graduates that receiving their diplomas isn’t the end—it’s just the beginning. He stressed the importance of integrity, hard work, and involvement in the community. His message resonated especially with veteran graduates, who received a warm round of applause as they were acknowledged for their service.
