The deal splits evenly at $5.75 million for each of the 2027 and 2028 seasons, with an extra $2 million available in bonuses, according to Jon Heyman from the New York Post.
Torrens was heading toward free agency at the end of the season, but this extension ensures he stays with the team through 2028. Coincidentally, today marks his 30th birthday, making this the first multi-year deal in his nine-season Major League Baseball career. The Mets acquired him from the Yankees in May 2024, and he has posted a batting line of .225/.281/.347 over 444 plate appearances and 152 games with the team.
His chance to shine came after Francisco Alvarez struggled with injuries in 2025, which allowed Torrens to play in 92 games—his second-highest total ever. Over his career, he has mainly served as a backup, totaling just 221 games in those seven years prior.
While $11.5 million might seem high for a catcher known for his light hitting, Torrens shines defensively. He was a finalist for the National League Gold Glove in 2025, earning +11 Catching Runs through excellent framing and the ability to catch baserunners. Since the beginning of the 2024 season, he successfully threw out 37 of 84 attempted steals.
