Goochland County, Va. — On Saturday, the community came together to donate over 12,000 pounds of food during the annual Community Food Drive Drop-Off Day. This effort supports Goochland Cares, a local nonprofit that helps nearly 400 families each week.
The donations were gathered from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Food Lion locations in Goochland and Manakin-Sabot. Goochland Cares aims to collect a total of 50,000 pounds of food by May 31. This target is crucial, especially as summer often sees a dip in donations to the food pantry.
Food insecurity remains a pressing issue. According to the latest statistics, about 1 in 8 Americans struggle to get enough food. Local food banks play a vital role in providing support to families in need.
This year’s drive not only highlighted the generosity of Goochland residents but also aimed to create more awareness about food scarcity in the community. As one volunteer noted, “Every bit helps. It’s about coming together for our neighbors.”
