As the November midterm elections approach, Donald Trump is facing significant disapproval. A recent poll from the Washington Post-ABC News-Ipsos shows his disapproval rating has hit a staggering 62%, the highest in his two terms.
Many Americans are dissatisfied with how he is handling key issues, especially the economy and the ongoing war in Iran. Gas prices have surged to a four-year high, pushing the financial burden onto everyday citizens. In the poll, 76% of respondents disapproved of Trump’s management of cost-of-living concerns, and 66% were unhappy with his approach to the war.
Overall, Trump’s approval rating sits at 37%, only slightly better than 39% earlier this year. While his support among Republican voters remains high at 85%, the number of those who strongly approve has fallen from 53% to 45%. Support among independent voters has also declined, now at just 25%.
Interestingly, Trump performed best on border issues, where he received 45% approval. However, even here, overall disapproval remains higher at 56%. His controversial decisions, such as deploying federal agents in cities, have faced backlash.
These low approval ratings could pose serious challenges for Republicans in the midterms. Recent trends show Democrats leading by five points among registered voters, a climb from earlier in the year.
Voter engagement also varies significantly by party. A striking 73% of Democrats feel this midterm is more crucial than past elections, compared to only 52% of Republicans. Among those most motivated to vote, 79% are Democrats, while 77% of Trump supporters express similar urgency.
Public sentiment is also against several of Trump’s policies. Many Americans oppose his initiatives like ending birthright citizenship and increasing defense spending. Approximately 70% believe he lacks honesty and trustworthiness, while about 60% question his mental acuity for the presidency.
These trends signal challenges for Trump and the Republican Party as they navigate the upcoming elections. Staying informed and engaged will be more critical than ever as the political landscape continues to evolve leading up to November.
