An investigation is underway after a United Airlines plane hit a light pole while landing at Newark Liberty International Airport on Sunday afternoon. The Federal Aviation Administration reported that Flight UA169 was coming in from Venice, Italy, carrying 221 passengers and 10 crew members.
Cellphone footage shows the Boeing 767 flying unusually low over the New Jersey Turnpike shortly before its landing around 2 p.m. According to United Airlines, “Upon final approach, the aircraft made contact with a light pole. It landed safely, and everyone on board is fine. Our maintenance team is checking for damage and we are looking into how this incident occurred.”
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey stated that the plane was approaching Runway 29 when it struck the pole. This collision damaged the pole and affected a tractor trailer on the turnpike. Thankfully, the driver sustained only minor injuries and was treated and released from the hospital.
Following the incident, airport staff quickly inspected the runway for debris, and normal operations resumed shortly after.
Interestingly, low-altitude incidents like this are becoming a topic of discussion. According to a recent report from the National Transportation Safety Board, close calls during landings have risen by over 30% in the past five years.
