Manchester United forward Matheus Cunha believes interim manager Michael Carrick brings a “magic” touch that can reconnect the club with the glory days of Sir Alex Ferguson. Cunha helped the team secure a vital 3-2 win over Liverpool at Old Trafford, a victory that clinched Champions League qualification with three games left to play.
This achievement seemed far-fetched not long ago. Football director Jason Wilcox had expressed hope for a return to Europe’s elite after the dismissal of Ruben Amorim in January. Under Carrick, the team has found its footing, winning 10 out of 14 matches. His experience as a key player in United’s last championship-winning side lends him credibility in the eyes of the squad.
Cunha appreciates Carrick’s teaching style. “I sat on the bench with him. How he educates everyone is amazing,” he said. He feels that Carrick brings back the essence of Ferguson’s era as he guides the new players.
Despite their recent success, Carrick has urged his team to stay focused. They need four more points to secure a top-three finish, which they haven’t achieved often since Ferguson retired in 2013. Finishing close to the champions, potentially within 12 points, would be a positive step compared to previous seasons.
“It’s a privilege to play at this club,” Cunha noted. “The Champions League is not the same without Manchester United, and the club isn’t the same without the Champions League.” He emphasized the need for more than just qualification; United must aim for trophies as well.
This summer will bring changes at Old Trafford, including uncertainty around Casemiro’s future. Though he has signaled a departure, Cunha remains hopeful. “I know how important he is to us,” he mentioned, reflecting on their bond. The Brazilian also noted that Casemiro’s presence has been instrumental, both on and off the pitch.
Cunha has made an impressive impact since joining United for £62.5 million last summer. His goal against Liverpool was his ninth this season, adding to key winners against Arsenal and Chelsea. He is not just a great player but also brings a unique personality to the team.
His goal celebrations have taken on a life of their own. After scoring against Liverpool, he showcased his surfing-themed celebration—with his teammates joining in the joy. “My friends in Brazil tell me to improve my celebration,” he laughed. “It’s part of my life to bring joy to football.”
