One intern noticed this delay. Frustrated with the slow process, he approached his supervisor with ideas for improvement. This was a project others didn’t have time to tackle, so he took the reins.
During his co-op, he examined the system closely and found ways to make it more efficient. Soon, users could start the program, take their lunch break, and come back to completed results. “I combined everything I learned to create a better version of the product,” Nguyen shared.
As he progressed through his co-op, Nguyen felt confident in his role. But he craved a new challenge. With the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), he decided to explore this unfamiliar territory for his next co-op.
“This was around the time ChatGPT was gaining popularity,” he recalled. Initially unsure about AI, he wanted to dive deep and understand it better. His final semester at 84.51 involved working with machine learning to support large language models used for advertising, ensuring they functioned correctly.
After wrapping up at 84.51, Nguyen shifted gears and joined Capital One for his last co-op. There, he worked as a software engineer, streamlining code and enhancing payment processing speed.
“I completed an end-to-end project solo while leading two interns,” he said. This shift from mentee to mentor empowered him to guide others through their learning journeys.
