Air defenses in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are on high alert after intercepting missiles and drone attacks believed to be from Iran. The UAE Ministry of Defence reported that three missiles were successfully intercepted, while a fourth landed harmlessly in the sea.
These strikes mark a significant escalation in tensions, especially as efforts to mediate peace in the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran have stumbled. The situation has worsened amid heated exchanges about blockades in the vital Strait of Hormuz.
An Iranian military official stated on national TV that Iran did not intend to target the UAE. However, an Iranian drone caused a fire at an oil facility in Fujairah, leading to moderate injuries for three workers, who were promptly treated.
This recent violence disrupted a period of relative calm that had persisted since a ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan on April 8. Prior to this, the UAE had faced numerous drone and missile attacks from Iran and had effectively intercepted thousands of these threats.
In an interesting turn, former U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for U.S. military operations aimed at assisting commercial vessels trapped in the Strait of Hormuz. He described it as a humanitarian mission, yet Iranian media reported that Iran’s navy had fired warning shots at U.S. warships in the same area.
The UAE condemned an earlier Iranian drone attack on an oil tanker off the coast of Oman, noting that no injuries occurred and the vessel was empty. Negotiations between the U.S. and Iran have remained stalled since the ceasefire began.
