At least 13 people were injured in a mass shooting at a campground party in Oklahoma on Sunday night. The incident occurred at Spring Creek Park on Arcadia Lake, about 15 miles northeast of Oklahoma City, during a gathering of young people around 9 p.m.
Edmond police spokesperson Emily Ward indicated that no arrests have been made yet. The heavily wooded area has complicated the search for evidence and potential suspects. “This is a terrifying situation. We understand the public’s concern and are working hard to find those responsible,” she said, adding that officers are interviewing victims and witnesses throughout the metro area.
This shooting marks the 131st mass shooting in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive. They define a mass shooting as any incident where at least four people are injured or killed, excluding the shooter. The persistent high number of such events has spurred calls for stronger gun control legislation. However, Congress has largely ignored these appeals over the years.
Of the injured, ten were sent to Integris Health Baptist Medical Center in Oklahoma City, while three were treated at Integris Health Edmond Hospital. Their conditions vary, but the situation has raised alarm in the community.
Witnesses shared their experiences on social media. One man named Armani Kessee said he helped a woman who was shot by a stray bullet. “It’s heartbreaking to see someone you care about hurt,” he expressed.
Organizers had promoted an event called “Sunday Funday,” which was scheduled for that evening at the park. Arcadia Lake is a well-known spot for fishing, boating, and camping, making this incident even more shocking.
Edmond, with about 100,000 residents, has a history of violence. In August 1986, a postal worker carrying out a tragic shooting took 14 lives, highlighting the long-standing issue of gun violence in the area.
While discussions about gun control continue, experts like criminologist Dr. Adam Lankford argue that the U.S. must find solutions to reduce these tragic events. He emphasizes the importance of addressing mental health, access to firearms, and community support to prevent future incidents.
