On a lively Saturday night, Fran Yeatts, the executive director of the West Seattle Food Bank, shared her thoughts at the “Nourish and Flourish” gala. Reflecting on the past year, she spoke about the challenges of rising costs and the weakening support systems. Yet, she found hope in the unwavering support from the community.
Surrounded by friends and supporters at the event venue, Yeatts highlighted the Food Bank’s critical role during crises, such as the SNAP benefits issues. The Food Bank has expanded its services beyond food assistance, offering emergency help for rent, utilities, and even clothing through its Clothesline program. Notably, when the Clothesline reopened in its new Delridge location, it saw a record 72 shoppers on its first day.
Throughout the evening, attendees celebrated not only the Food Bank’s achievements but also the dedicated team behind it. Instead of showcasing client testimonials, a video featured staff members, reflecting their ongoing hard work and commitment.
One of the night’s highlights was the presentation of the Nourishing Neighbors Award to the First Lutheran Church of West Seattle, which has been a long-time supporter of the Food Bank. The award was accepted in honor of the late Rev. Ron Marshall, a passionate advocate for the organization.
Board president Joe Everett emphasized that the Food Bank is more than just a food distribution center; it’s a hub powered by volunteers and community spirit. The gala also featured humor, courtesy of comedian Scott Losse, balancing the serious nature of the event with light-hearted moments.
The live auction was a major draw, generating excitement with unique experiences like taco parties and getaways. The popular Dessert Dash also added a fun competitive spirit to the evening. Generous donors stepped up, and the gala raised an impressive $202,300 toward the spring goal of $250,000.
In a world where food insecurity is a significant issue—affecting 10.5% of U.S. households as of 2021—community support is vital. Yeatts reminded everyone of the difference each person can make in the lives of their neighbors.
As the gala concluded, the Food Bank stood poised to continue its crucial mission, supported by an engaged and caring community.
