Trump Calls Out Pope for ‘Endangering Catholics’ with Iran Position: What You Need to Know

Donald Trump recently criticized Pope Leo XIV, claiming the pope’s stance on Iran could harm Catholics. This tension arises just before Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, meets with the pope at the Vatican to discuss these issues.

During an interview, Trump stated that the pope seems okay with Iran having nuclear weapons, which he believes puts many people at risk. However, the pope hasn’t ever supported Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Instead, he has called for peace and dialogue, particularly regarding conflicts in the Middle East.

Brian Burch, the US Ambassador to the Holy See, expects a candid discussion during Rubio’s visit. He noted that nations often have disagreements but can resolve them through open communication. Burch emphasized that there isn’t a major rift between the US and the Vatican. Rubio’s aim is to foster understanding and address any differences.

This meeting is significant, coinciding with the first anniversary of Leo’s papacy. Earlier, Trump had criticized the pope’s leadership and even shared an altered image of himself in a religious context, which he later deleted, claiming it was a misunderstanding.

Rubio is also set to mend relations with the Italian government after Trump’s harsh words towards Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. Rubio will engage with both Meloni and Italy’s foreign minister, aiming for a more cooperative stance.

Interestingly, criticism of the pope isn’t just coming from Trump. JD Vance, the US Vice President and a Catholic convert, has echoed concerns that the Vatican should focus more on moral issues rather than political ones.

As the world watches these diplomatic efforts unfold, many are keen to see how the relationship between the US government and the Vatican evolves moving forward.
