Pixel 11 Pro Smarts: Losing the Temperature Sensor—Your Thoughts?

Google seems ready to part ways with the built-in temperature sensor on the Pixel 11 Pro. This follows the launch of the Pixel 8 Pro, which introduced this feature. The new sensor acted as a surface thermometer and was linked to an app designed for temperature readings. Initially, many questioned its usefulness, and we’ve even called it “pretty dumb” for lack of clear applications.

After expanding its functionality to include body temperature, it still didn’t grab much attention. A survey by Google in late 2025 found that many Pixel owners rarely utilized the temperature sensor. With the recent leaks about the Pixel 11 Pro, it appears that this feature is being dropped altogether.

Early images of the Pixel 11 Pro reveal a new camera design, featuring just one cutout instead of two. This suggests the removal of the temperature sensor. Further leaks indicate that Google plans to introduce a new feature called “Pixel Glow,” which involves rear-facing LEDs. Both the Pixel 11 Pro and the Pixel 11 Pro XL will omit the temperature sensor but will have these new lights. Interestingly, it seems every Pixel Fold model has skipped this feature as well.

Despite Google not yet confirming these changes, the trend clearly indicates that the temperature sensor is on its way out. This might not come as a surprise, especially considering the lack of user engagement with the feature.

What are your thoughts? Did the temperature sensor ever serve a purpose for you?
