The Rolling Stones are about to release their new album, Foreign Tongues, on July 10. They’ve already teased it with the lead single “In the Stars” and another track called “Rough and Twisted.” Both songs show a delightful blend of their classic style and fresh sounds.
“In the Stars” kicks off with a pop-rock vibe reminiscent of their early Eighties work. Mick Jagger’s catchy chorus—“It’s in the stars, it’s our destiny”—paired with lively backing vocals and piano gives a new twist to their iconic sound. It invites you to dance along, just like the best Stones tracks do.
On the other hand, “Rough and Twisted” dives deep into bluesy rock, filled with slide guitar and boogie-woogie piano. You can almost feel the energy of their Seventies era here. Jagger’s powerful voice rings out, asking, “Why don’t you drive me down that rough and twisted road?”
The band recorded Foreign Tongues at Metropolis Studios in West London, with Andrew Watt producing again. This session brought together Jagger, Keith Richards, Ron Wood, and other talented musicians, including the late Charlie Watts, whose contribution was recorded shortly before his passing in 2021. They also brought in guest stars like Paul McCartney and Robert Smith, which adds an exciting layer to the mix.
Reflecting on the recording process, Jagger noted the vibrant atmosphere in the studio. “It was an intense few weeks,” he said, emphasizing how the collaborative energy fueled their creativity. Richards echoed this sentiment, sharing how much he enjoyed the process and the special connection they had in the studio.
The album’s cover art features a unique design that stacks illustrations of the band members’ faces, created by artist Nathaniel Mary Quinn. Fans can expect to find Foreign Tongues in various formats, from CDs to multiple vinyl editions.
Interestingly, the track “Rough and Twisted” was previously released under the name Cockroaches, a nod to their history of using different names during performances in the late ’70s.
While the Stones currently have no tour plans, Jagger, Richards, and Wood are set to make a special appearance in Brooklyn to celebrate the album launch.
Curiously, data from a recent survey reveals that over 68% of music fans are eager for new music from legends like the Stones, showing that their influence and popularity remain strong.
As they gear up for Foreign Tongues, the Rolling Stones continue to prove that rock and roll is indeed alive and thriving.
