TACLOBAN CITY — On April 22, about 200 youth leaders gathered in Tacloban for “Urban Bayanihan 2026,” an Earth Day summit designed to inspire young people to engage with climate change and promote environmental sustainability.
This event, held at Pacific Point, marked a decade since Super Typhoon Yolanda devastated the area, reminding everyone of the city’s vulnerability to extreme weather. Organizers created a space for collaboration, encouraging attendees to share ideas and work together on environmental issues. Participants took part in discussions and workshops aimed at building resilient communities in the face of climate challenges.
A standout feature was an interactive showcase by 11 youth-led organizations, each presenting their projects and climate advocacy efforts. Groups like The Weekender, Rotaract Club of San Juanico, and Youth Innovators highlighted their initiatives, fostering a sense of community among those passionate about the environment.
Rasheed Luke Abordo, who participated, expressed his enthusiasm: “Being around like-minded individuals in Tacloban is inspiring. It reinforces our commitment to environmental issues.”
The summit also included creative competitions such as poster-making and poetry, focusing on raising awareness about environmental responsibility. Project lead Aron Sedrick Caminong noted the turnout was greater than expected, with youth from various parts of Eastern Visayas joining in.
“We aimed to unite local youth leaders, but the participation from across the region was a pleasant surprise,” he shared. “We want them to feel inspired and know they are not alone in this fight for climate action.”
Recent studies show that youth activism plays a vital role in advancing sustainability. According to a 2022 survey by the Global Youth Climate Network, over 75% of young people feel a personal responsibility to address climate change. This growing engagement can lead to significant changes at the community level.
