Hyderabad: India’s Sports Ministry made an announcement on the country’s position regarding international sports. The ongoing ban on bilateral sporting ties with Pakistan will remain in place. However, Pakistani athletes will be allowed to compete in multinational events held in India.
A circular was issued to National Sports Federations and the Indian Olympic Association detailing this policy. The ministry highlighted its commitment to the Olympic Charter and international sporting guidelines, particularly as India prepares for upcoming global events like the 2030 Commonwealth Games and the 2036 Olympics.
In simple terms, while there won’t be any bilateral sports events between India and Pakistan, India will host international tournaments that include Pakistani teams. The ministry stated: “Indian teams will not participate in competitions in Pakistan, nor will we allow Pakistani teams to play here.”
This decision builds on earlier discussions, especially after controversies around India’s participation in the Asia Cup held in the UAE, where concerns were raised due to a terror attack in Pahalgam.
### No Bilateral Sporting Ties
India’s policy clearly states that bilateral games with Pakistan are off the table for the foreseeable future. The focus will instead be on international competitions that may feature teams from both countries.
### Pakistani Athletes in India
Despite the ban on bilateral competitions, Pakistani athletes can travel to India for multinational events. The Sports Ministry has assured that the visa processes will be streamlined to allow for smooth participation.
### Expert Opinions
Experts in sports diplomacy note that these decisions are often influenced by political relations. Dr. Sarah Ahmed, a sports psychologist, commented, “Sport can unite, but in this case, political tensions dictate the boundaries. It’s crucial for athletes to focus on competition while navigating these complexities.”
### Recent Statistics
According to a recent survey by the International Sports Research Institute, 80% of athletes believe that political issues should not hinder participation in sports. This statistic underscores the ongoing debate about politics and sports and the hope for cooperation despite differences.
While India maintains its stance, the move allows for continued engagement through global events, which can foster relationships in a more structured way. Thus, the future holds potential for healthy competition, even amid restrictions on direct interactions.
