KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukraine faced renewed drone attacks from Russia, despite a ceasefire declared by Kyiv. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces targeted various regions throughout the night.
The Russian Defense Ministry insisted that Ukraine violated the ceasefire, claiming they intercepted 53 Ukrainian drones. In a tragic incident, a Ukrainian drone strike in Dzhankoi, Crimea, reportedly killed five people.
This comes as the war enters its fifth year following Russia’s invasion. Diplomatic efforts led by the U.S. have failed to yield results, leaving hopes for a peaceful resolution dim.
Recent attacks have been devastating. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated that Russian strikes on Tuesday alone resulted in 27 civilian deaths and about 120 injuries. The United Nations estimates that the war has claimed over 15,000 civilian lives.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized Russia for ignoring the ceasefire. He urged an end to the ongoing hostilities and expressed frustration over Russia’s reluctance to pursue genuine peace negotiations. “Russia must end the war it is currently waging,” he stated.
Both sides are engaged in extensive long-range attacks. Despite Ukraine’s unilateral ceasefire, Russia continues its strikes, using drones and glide bombs. There’s a significant military presence along the 1,250-kilometer front line, where Russia’s larger army is struggling against Ukraine’s drone defenses.
Zelenskyy declared the ceasefire after Russia announced its own break in fighting to commemorate the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II. However, past ceasefires have often been ineffective due to mutual distrust.
European leaders considered Ukraine’s ceasefire a goodwill gesture, but skepticism remains regarding Russia’s commitment to peace. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha highlighted that Russia’s recent proposal for a ceasefire seemed insincere, aimed at distracting from military actions rather than seeking a real resolution.
Calls for increased international pressure on Moscow are growing, emphasizing the need for new sanctions and greater support for Ukraine. The ongoing conflict reflects a deepening crisis, with the potential for more civilian suffering if no meaningful steps are taken toward peace.
