Survey Reveals: Most People Would Invest Their Income for Peace of Mind

New research reveals that the average American would spend nearly their entire annual income for peace of mind. In uncertain economic times, a recent survey of 2,000 U.S. adults explored how much people are willing to pay for comfort and security.

Despite an average household income of about $79,000, respondents indicated they’d spend nearly $57,000 a year for that peace of mind. They’d particularly prioritize essentials like groceries and medications, willing to allocate around $21,000 for that security.

Job security and health-related expenses also rank high on their lists. People would pay about $19,800 to avoid job loss and $16,400 to ensure they wouldn’t face hefty medical bills.

Dr. Jenny Martin, PsyD, founder of Gemstone Wellness, highlights that this desire for assurance stems from real needs rather than simply avoiding unexpected challenges. “In today’s world, peace of mind is increasingly linked to a sense of control,” she says. “When basic needs feel unpredictable, anxiety rises.”

Interestingly, almost half of the people surveyed (47%) prefer paying for peace of mind, yet 41% find it out of reach financially. This tension is palpable; a separate survey by Talker Research and EarnIn shows that many Americans spend about half their paycheck within two days of receiving it. This leaves them with very little leftover for savings or unexpected costs.

Financial stress is commonplace. One in five individuals experiences daily financial anxiety, and a significant 28% believe that achieving peace of mind is harder today than it was five years ago.

But peace of mind shouldn’t be seen as a luxury. Dr. Martin stresses that true peace comes from developing skills to cope with uncertainty. “It’s less about eliminating unpredictability and more about enhancing our ability to handle it,” she states.

  • Create small, repetitive routines that signal safety to your mind and body.
  • Incorporate moments of control in your day, like scheduled exercise or short breaks.

  • Make these habits a daily practice, shifting your perspective from purchasing peace to embodying it.
