Tyler, Texas, is gearing up for the annual Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride, where motorcyclists don their sharpest outfits and classic bikes to raise awareness for men’s mental and prostate health.
This global event started in Australia over 15 years ago when a man named Mark Hawwa was inspired by a television character sporting a tailored suit on a motorcycle. After facing his own battle with prostate cancer, Hawwa organized the first ride in his local community, which quickly spread worldwide.
In Tyler, this is the sixth year the community will officially participate. Pedro Tamez, the ride’s local host, emphasizes the importance of routine medical checkups for men. Jason Glasscock, a sponsor for the event, echoes this sentiment: “Men often serve as the providers for their families. It’s crucial to ensure they remain healthy and can perform optimally.”
Tamez shares a crucial insight: many men won’t notice symptoms until it’s too late. “Annual checkups are key to maintaining good health and addressing prostate issues,” he advises.
The ride also shines a light on mental health. Glasscock notes that men often default to problem-solving rather than processing their emotions, which can lead to significant mental strain. “We don’t talk about our feelings,” he admits, reflecting on societal expectations around masculinity.
Local mental health specialists will be present at the ride’s conclusion, providing resources and support to participants.
This event is part of a larger effort in Texas, contributing to the Movember Foundation. Every donation supports cancer research and treatment, ensuring funds go directly to those in need.
In recent years, men’s mental health has gained more attention, with studies showing that men are three times more likely to die by suicide than women. This statistic underscores the importance of initiatives like the Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride.
