Who will come out on top at this busy Mother’s Day box office?
Most predictions lean towards Mortal Kombat II leading with over $40 million in North America. Some analysts even suggest it could hit $45 million or $49 million. However, New Line and Warner Bros. are expecting a more modest opening of about $35 million, with a total worldwide launch between $65 million and $80 million.
The first Mortal Kombat film was a surprise hit despite its simultaneous release on HBO Max during the pandemic. It opened with $23 million and ended with $42 million domestically and $84.4 million worldwide. While specific streaming numbers weren’t shared, the swift move to create a sequel shows confidence. Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is putting up a strong fight. With a domestic opening of $77.2 million, it’s on track to be one of the biggest female-led films since Barbie. Lastly, James Cameron’s concert documentary, Billie Eilish — Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour (Live in 3D), will be released, predicted to earn between $6 million and $9 million. Cameron’s unique 3D technology promises to immerse viewers in Eilish’s live experience.
