Alvarez, 52, had a promising future in coaching, having led the Double-A Erie team to back-to-back league titles in 2023 and 2024. He stepped up to Triple-A in 2025.

The incident came to light when the HR department received a complaint about Alvarez. Although requests for comments from Alvarez and the Tigers went unanswered, he did share a statement with ESPN. He mentioned that he had sent a “lighthearted joke” in a text, but realized it was inappropriate. He expressed regret, stating it wasn’t reflective of his professional conduct over the years.

The employee handbook of Ilitch Sports + Entertainment, the Tigers’ parent company, clearly states that violations of the harassment policy can lead to immediate termination. In 2025, assistant general manager Sam Menzin resigned after being accused of sending inappropriate photos to women in the workplace.

A September 2023 investigation by The Athletic revealed that at least eight men, including senior executives, had faced allegations of misconduct. Following the report, Peter Soto, a vice president, was also let go. CEO Ryan Gustafson defended the company’s culture, emphasizing the need for improvement but downplaying larger issues of misconduct.
