Samsung recently revealed exciting news about its Galaxy Watch6. In collaboration with Chung-Ang University Gwangmyeong Hospital in Korea, they’ve shown that the watch can accurately predict vasovagal syncope (VVS) using biosignals. This could change how we think about health monitoring.

Vasovagal syncope happens when stress causes a sudden dip in heart rate and blood pressure, which can lead to fainting. Although fainting itself isn’t usually dangerous, it can lead to serious injuries from falls. That’s why predicting these episodes is so important.

Professor Junhwan Cho from Chung-Ang University notes, “About 40% of people experience VVS at some point, with a third facing repeated episodes.” If we could give those affected a heads-up, it could prevent many injuries.

In the study, 132 patients with suspected VVS underwent controlled fainting tests. Researchers used the Galaxy Watch’s photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor to analyze heart rate variability (HRV). Their AI model predicted fainting episodes up to five minutes in advance with about 85% accuracy. The sensitivity was high at 90%, showing a real potential for patient safety.

Jongmin Choi, who leads health R&D at Samsung Electronics, emphasized this shift to preventive care. “Wearable tech can help transform healthcare from reactive to proactive,” he stated. This technology can empower users to maintain their health more effectively.

The study was published in the “European Heart Journal – Digital Health,” highlighting its significance in bringing wearable tech to the forefront of medical innovation. This is the first time a commercial smartwatch has shown the ability to predict fainting.
