Jim Bridenstine is back in the spotlight. After serving as NASA’s administrator from 2018 to 2021, he has taken on a new role as the CEO of Quantum Space, a Maryland company focusing on advanced spacecraft. Bridenstine, a former naval aviator and U.S. representative, emphasizes that national security in space is crucial.
Quantum Space is developing a spacecraft called Ranger. It’s roughly the size of a Volkswagen Beetle before its solar panels open. Ranger aims to give the military exceptional maneuverability in space, from low-Earth orbit to cislunar space. It can carry 4,000 kilograms of hydrazine propellant for quick maneuvers. Bridenstine describes the fuel as high-energy, burning rapidly and allowing for refueling—both for itself and other spacecraft.
The U.S. Space Force is keen on enhancing its in-space maneuvering options. Bridenstine is confident that Ranger’s large fuel tanks and unique “multi-mode” technology will meet this demand. This technology allows the spacecraft to operate in both high-thrust and high-efficiency modes. In September, Quantum Space acquired Phase Four to boost these capabilities further.
Funding for the Space Force is on the rise. President Trump’s budget request for fiscal year 2027 suggests an 80% increase, bringing it to $71 billion. This growing investment highlights the importance of military operations in outer space.
So, what will the military do with Ranger? Quantum Space has already secured a contract with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) to support the LASSO program. This program aims to create spacecraft that can navigate very low lunar orbits—potentially just 10 kilometers above the Moon’s surface—to study water concentrations there. They’re also working on the Oracle-P program with the Air Force Research Lab, which focuses on situational awareness for cislunar space. Furthermore, Quantum Space is one of 14 competitors in the $6.2 billion Andromeda program for developing surveillance satellites.
As interest in space security grows, companies like Quantum Space are stepping up. Technology’s role in defense is becoming increasingly vital, and Ranger is at the forefront of this exciting shift.
