Racer Athletics Breaks Community Service Records in 2025-26: A Testament to Murray State University’s Commitment to Giving Back!

Murray State Athletics just experienced an incredible year, setting a stunning community service record of 2,340 hours. This achievement marks a 95% increase in community engagement, showcasing the dedication of their student-athletes.

Dr. Ron Patterson, President of Murray State University, praised the hard work of the athletes, coaches, and staff. He noted, “Balancing sports and academics is tough, and this record speaks volumes about our student-athletes’ commitment to making a difference in the community.”

Throughout the year, the Racers partnered with 43 organizations. They contributed to local schools through the Classroom of the Month initiative and supported vital services like the Murray-Calloway County Animal Shelter and the United Way.

Nico Yantko, the Athletic Director, expressed pride in the team’s efforts. He emphasized how this accomplishment reflects the athletes’ passion for their community. “We look forward to new opportunities to serve and surpass this goal in the future,” he said.

Nearly all student-athletes participated, letting their impact shine across various teams.

A significant part of their success comes from the Dennis Jackson Racers Leadership Program, introduced in January 2023. This program offers tools for personal growth and career readiness. Named after Dennis Jackson, the first African American student-athlete at Murray State, it aims to guide athletes from recruitment to retirement. Jackson himself graduated with honors in history and physical education and was a standout in two sports.

The positive influence of this program aligns with national trends showing that student-athletes are increasingly engaging in community service. In a recent study, about 70% of college athletes reported participating in community service activities, highlighting a growing commitment to social responsibility among student-athletes.
