Michael Davidson, an avid cyclist from Baptist Health Milestone, has transformed his love for biking into a journey of connection and adventure in Vietnam. His story is more than just about cycling; it’s about healing and rediscovery.

Michael first encountered Vietnam over fifty years ago during the war. “Back then, everyone was shooting at me,” he recalls. “Now, when I bike there, I’m greeted with smiles, not hostility.” He returned in 2001, seeking warmth and escape from Kentucky’s winter. The timing coincided perfectly with Tết, the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, celebrated each February, which symbolizes hope and renewal.

Over the years, he started to invite friends to join him. What began as solo rides evolved into a group of 17 riders on their latest trip, collectively covering 150 miles. They ride in support of a small orphanage in the Mekong Delta, ensuring it’s well-maintained throughout the year. “Our mission is to give back while enjoying the ride,” he says.

Vietnam has changed since Michael’s first visit. Tourism has brought growth and a new culture of hospitality. He shares a memorable encounter: “In a remote village, children would gather around, eager to practice their English. I met two girls who asked about my past in the war. When I confirmed I was a soldier, one said her family had been Viet Cong, simply stating ‘freedom’ as their motive. That moment shifted my understanding of the conflict.”

This inspiring journey highlights the importance of connection and perspective. As Michael’s group looks to return to Vietnam every two years, he emphasizes the fulfilling nature of cycling, both physically and mentally. Whether you’re pedaling at home, in class, or across the globe, it’s about moving towards a healthier life.
