SK hynix is launching an exciting project to improve the health of the Namdaecheon river in Yangyang, Gangwon Province. Recently, the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with several organizations, including the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment. This collaboration aims to enhance the aging weirs in the area, critical for restoring the river’s ecosystem.
The concept of being “water positive” means that a company returns more water to the environment than it uses. Through this project, SK hynix plans to ensure that water flows freely in the Namdaecheon river, which is the largest spawning ground for migratory fish in South Korea. The enhancements to the weirs, scheduled from 2026 to 2037, are essential for creating fish habitats and allowing salmon to return to their breeding grounds.
The Namdaecheon river is particularly important as it has been struggling with ecological issues that prevent salmon from returning home due to aging infrastructure and disrupted water flow. By improving these barriers, SK hynix aims to support the local ecosystem and promote biodiversity.
Beyond ecological benefits, the project is expected to serve the local community well. A restored riverside could enhance the living environment and even boost local tourism, considering that returning salmon can attract visitors. This initiative exemplifies how corporate environmental efforts can positively impact both nature and local economies.
Lee Byeong-gi, head of mass production at SK hynix, emphasizes that this project is about fostering growth alongside the community and the ecosystem. He mentioned, “This project will become an example of how a company’s water-positive activities can support shared growth with local communities and the natural environment.”
