High school students from Oxford County recently participated in UMA’s second annual Medical Bootcamp, a full-day event aimed at connecting students with exciting careers in health care. This hands-on experience allowed about 40 students to discover key skills and pathways in various fields, such as nursing, medical laboratory technology, mental health, and dental services.
During the event, students engaged in practical activities led by UMA faculty. They got a feel for what it’s like to work in health care by practicing wound care and using medical equipment in a real clinical environment. The goal was to give them a taste of potential careers and encourage them to consider further education in these fields.
The partnership with Community Concepts, supported by a Workforce Opportunities for Rural Communities grant, aims to expand career exploration for students in rural areas. This initiative is vital since many students may not have easy access to such opportunities. It highlights the growing demand for skilled health professionals in Maine, especially as the state grapples with an aging population.
According to recent statistics from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, health care jobs are projected to grow by 15% by 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations. This growth emphasizes the importance of events like the Medical Bootcamp, helping to equip the next generation for these roles.
The excitement doesn’t stop here. On May 12, UMA Bangor will host another Medical Bootcamp, inviting around 150 students from 12 schools in the Katahdin Region and Washington County. This upcoming event will include insights into the veterinary technology program, along with other health care paths.
With programs like these, UMA is offering valuable experiences that not only inspire students but also help shape the future of health care in Maine.
