Recently, Link completed crucial testing at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. This testing is vital to ensure Link can perform its mission effectively. “The Swift boost attempt is a fast, high-risk, high-reward mission,” said John Van Eepoel, Swift’s mission director. Swift currently orbits the Earth at about 400 kilometers. Increased solar activity has caused its orbit to decay faster than expected, moving it from a safer altitude of approximately 600 kilometers. “We are in a race against the clock,” said Shawn Domagal-Goldman, acting director of NASA’s Astrophysics Division, stressing the urgency of the situation.
Katalyst received a $30 million contract in September 2025 to develop Link. This spacecraft will dock with Swift to boost its orbit. The approach aims to be cost-effective compared to building a new mission. Kieran Wilson, Link’s principal investigator, pointed out the unique challenges posed by Swift’s decaying orbit, noting that the timeline influences how much risk they’re willing to take.
The mission is set to launch in June. Katalyst has chosen Northrop Grumman’s Pegasus XL rocket for this task. The rocket’s unique air-launch capability allows for quick deployment anywhere on Earth, making it an ideal choice given the mission’s requirements.
