In a proud moment for Karnataka, Basavaraj Kempwad from the small village of Savadi has achieved the All India First Rank in the Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination. This achievement, announced by the Union Public Service Commission, has brought joy to his village and beyond, especially among aspiring students from rural areas.
At just 25, Basavaraj’s journey began in a humble farming family. He completed his early education in local schools before attending a residential school for his secondary studies. His passion for nature led him to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Forestry in Sirsi, Karnataka. After graduating, he relocated to Bengaluru to focus on preparing for the IFS exam.
What sets Basavaraj apart is his unique approach to studying. Unlike many candidates who enroll in costly coaching programs, he opted for self-study. For almost two years, he dedicated himself to learning in libraries from morning until midnight, honing his method based on past mistakes. This was his second attempt at the IFS exam; his first effort didn’t pass the preliminary round. However, he didn’t lose heart. Instead, he re-evaluated his strategy and prepared more meticulously this time.
“I learned from my failures and worked hard to improve,” Basavaraj shared. His upbringing in a farming family nurtured his love for environmental conservation, which ultimately fueled his desire to serve through the Indian Forest Service.
Interestingly, he had once aspired to be an IAS officer. However, his deep-rooted interest in ecology and sustainable practices guided him toward the IFS. Basavaraj expressed profound gratitude to those who supported him throughout his journey, emphasizing the role of his parents, teachers, and friends.
His achievement has sparked celebrations in Savadi. Villagers gathered to honor his success, praising him as a dedicated student who overcame numerous challenges. His story has inspired many young people in north Karnataka, showing them that success is attainable through hard work and determination.
Basavaraj’s brother, Siddu Kempwad, serves in the Mysuru City Armed Reserve Police, highlighting a family legacy of public service. Basavaraj’s standout performance in the IFS exam, alongside others like Anshuman Kumar (second rank) and Siddharth (third rank), reflects a broader trend of aspirants from rural areas doing exceptional work in competitive exams.
Recent surveys indicate that rural students are increasingly pursuing higher education and competitive exams, breaking barriers that once seemed insurmountable. According to a report by the National Sample Survey Office, the enrollment of rural students in higher education has risen substantially, suggesting a growing drive for educational achievement among young individuals in these communities.
Basavaraj Kempwad’s journey exemplifies that with hard work, discipline, and the right mindset, anyone can reach their goals, no matter where they come from. As he prepares to return to his village, the hope is that his story will continue to inspire others. His success is not just personal; it reflects the emerging potential of rural youth across India.
