Elaine Jones was excited to share the donations with a fellow letter carrier. “When you tell us to put out the food, we put it out,” she said. Today was Stamp Out Hunger Day, a national food drive aimed at helping those in need.
“We got dried goods and canned goods. I see many neighbors have put out a lot; we appreciate you!” Elaine remarked as she spoke to Danielle Dill, who has walked this Redford neighborhood for nearly ten years. While Danielle usually delivers mail, today she’s collecting donations instead.
“Everyone is donating! I have a great route and expect to collect a lot of food today!” Danielle added with genuine enthusiasm.
Since its start in the early 90s, the National Association of Letter Carriers has organized this food drive. Since 2010, Gleaners and local partners have distributed over 15 million pounds of food. That’s a big number and shows the impact of events like this.
Danielle has her reasons for giving back. “I was once in need of help. It feels good to give back,” she said. “I’ll sleep well tonight.”
Yet, summer can be tough for food banks. Elaine noted, “This time of year is crucial. Many kids can’t get free meals from school, making it harder on families. This drive helps restock the food bank.”
Elaine has been encouraging her neighbors to donate. Having spent most of her career as a postal worker, she’s participated in the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive numerous times. She’s hopeful about the community’s support, saying, “We’re going to be successful because I trust my letter carrier!”
According to the USDA, about 10.5% of American households were food insecure in 2021. Events like Stamp Out Hunger can make a real difference in reducing this number. With ongoing community efforts, there’s potential for even more change. Social media reactions to the event have shown a swell of local pride, with many sharing their contributions online. This sense of community can inspire others to join in.
